Long Car Trip? Pack This…
If you’re getting ready to take a long trip by car, add a few of the items below to your checklist right after clean underwear and an extra set of swimming trunks. Since your trip will be by car, it is important to make sure your car is up to it. Also important, is pertinent information, some emergency equipment, and, oh yeah, something to keep the kids busy.
The Car:
When was your last oil change? If you can’t remember, it’s probably time. Generally, oil needs to be changed about every three thousand miles and these miles will add up quick as you start out on your trip. While you’re getting the oil changed, check your brakes, spare tire, fluids, and tire alignment. Mention to your car technician that you’re going on a long trip, and see if he has any suggestions for you as well.
Pertinent Information:
When you’re stranded in Idaho or some other state where nobody knows you, and you’re a long way from home, certain information comes in handy. Make sure you have with you a license, and maybe even a copy – that’s copy – of your birth certificate. Bring ID cards for the kids. If you should misplace one, you have an instant picture with information. Also bring your doctor’s and your kid’s doctor’s numbers in case you should need to reach them, along with any prescription information or paperwork needed for refills. Also, have on you allergy information for yourself and your kids. Don’t assume you’ll remember everything if an emergency does crop up.
Along with the above information make sure you have your car manuals. If the check engine light comes on, you can look up quickly in the manual what to do. For instance, in some cars, if the check engine light is not flashing, it may mean a simple, routine timing belt replacement. Along with your car manual include the number to your garage. This is helpful if you run into a problem far from a garage, or if the local garage doesn’t handle your type of car. A call to your regular garage or car dealership may help you find the next closest place that will solve your problem. Finally, have handy the address and phone number of your destination.
